Winners of AFS/FEF Student Technology Contest Announced at Metalcasting Congress

Two students shared first prize in the 2018 AFS/FEF Student Technology Contest at the 122nd Metalcasting Congress in Fort Worth, Texas, April 4.

Trevor Constance from Missouri University of Science & Technology and David Sánchez from Instituto Tecnológico de Saltillo were named co-winners of the annual competition, which required students to create digital posters of their metalcasting research and present their projects at Congress.

AFS Presents Industry Awards at Congress

The American Foundry Society recognized leaders and luminaries in the field of metalcasting during the 122nd Metalcasting Congress, April 3-5 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The AFS Board of Awards presented the metalcasting industry’s top honor, the Gold Medal Awards, to John R. Keough, P.E., and David V. Neff, Ph.D.

Keough, proprietor of Joyworks LLC (Ann Arbor, Michigan), was awarded the Thomas W. Pangborn Gold Medal “for pioneering efforts in the advancement of the marketing of metal castings through the education of current and future customers.”

Commerce Department Outlines Process for Seeking Exclusions from Steel and Aluminum Tariffs

The U.S. Department of Commerce formally announced its procedures for companies seeking exemptions from the Trump administration’s recently announced tariffs on steel and aluminum product imports. The department will start accepting exclusion requests on Monday, March 19, 2018 from U.S. businesses that use the metal in manufacturing cars, trucks, construction, food packaging, beverage packaging, or other commercial activities.

President Trump Imposes Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum Metalcasters Concerned with Potential Rise in Metals Prices, Impact on Their Customers & Loss of Orders

On Thursday, March 8, President Trump officially signed two proclamations enacting tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum. The tariffs are set to take effect on March 23, 2018, and contain an initial exemption for Canada and Mexico, as the administration seeks broader trade concessions from both countries as it renegotiates the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
