Historic Greenbrier Resort to Host AFS 2022 Foundry Leadership Summit

Known as “America’s Resort,” the Greenbrier will host the 2022 Foundry Leadership Summit, Sept. 18-22 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

Nestled in the Allegheny Mountains, the resort will provide the perfect setting for foundry owners, CEOs, vice presidents and rising leaders to meet with one another, hear from outstanding speakers and help honor outstanding metalcasters with the Keating Founders Freedom Award and the William J. Grede Award.

The Greenbrier has a singularly impressive history. Presidents from Martin Van Buren to Dwight Eisenhower, and from John Kennedy to George W. Bush, have visited the resort. When the Iran Hostage Crisis came to an end in 1981, the freed hostages were flown to the Greenbrier to rejoin their families. During the Cold War, the U.S. government built a secret, secure bunker to house lawmakers in the cast of a nuclear attack. The bunker is now available for tours.

This year’s Foundry Leadership Summit will feature an array of world-class, thought-provoking speakers, including:

  • Ari Fleischer, former Press Secretary to President George W. Bush and Fox News analyst, who will discuss political matters just weeks before the mid-term elections. He’ll also sign copies of his new book.
  • Gordon Chang, author of "The Coming Collapse of China,” who will discuss the future of U.S.-China relations and reshoring.
  • Resilience expert and mountain climber Jim Davidson, who will share his keys to overcoming adversity.
  • The Hill columnist Gene Marks, who will provide strategies for attracting and retaining great employees.
  • Mark Vitner, Principal and Chief Economist for Piedmont Crescent Capital, who will explore the economic outlook for manufacturers.
  • Stephen Gold, president and CEO of the Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation, who will discuss the state of manufacturing.
  • Additionally, leaders from across the metalcasting supply chain will lead panels and presentations on industry-specific topics, including the challenges and opportunities metalcasters will face in 2023 and beyond, and legislative and regulatory issues brewing on Capitol Hill.

The Summit includes an optional golf tournament on the afternoon of Sept. 18 on the beautiful Meadows Golf Course, which dates to 1911. Once again this year, the golf event is chaired by past AFS Board member Mike Didion of Didion International.

Other recreation options at the property include spa, historic bunker tours, horseback riding, hiking, horseshoes, bicycling and tennis.

“One of the highlights of every Foundry Leadership Summit is the business networking,” said AFS CEO Doug Kurkul. “Relationships and friendships made and renewed at these Summits play an important role in the careers of leaders in our industry.”
