AFS has created a Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for spent foundry sand that applies to approximately 80% of foundry sand, covering sands from iron, steel, and aluminum foundries under specific circumstances. Typically, the required risk assessment will identify these sands as non-hazardous, industrial solid waste with a broad array of acceptable downstream uses.

Foundries generating sand from other alloys may conduct a risk assessment for their specific sand to determine if it may also qualify as a non-hazardous Industrial solid waste. Often, additional alloys are found to be toxic and leachable, disqualifying these sands for most reuse applications.
