AFS to celebrate Manufacturing Day by opening doors to students

Along with AFS Corporate Members across the country, the American Foundry Society will celebrate Manufacturing Day with hands-on metalcasting demonstrations and an open house for students at its headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois, on Friday, Oct. 5.

School groups and homeschoolers have been invited to AFS to make their own castings to take home, discover exciting career opportunities in metalcasting, and learn how this essential $33 billion industry shapes American manufacturing, our economy, and our quality of life.

Manufacturing Day is an annual event in which manufacturers open their doors to their communities for tours and demonstrations. Metalcasters and foundry suppliers will be among the businesses taking part in this celebration, highlighting the many career paths available in metalcasting and showcasing what they make—everything from engine blocks to fire hydrants to medical equipment.

“We love participating in this event every year, along with a select few other local manufacturers, to showcase the work we do and the products we produce to support a diverse group of industries,” said Sharon Calahan, director of HR for AFS Corporate Member Bremen Castings, Inc. (Bremen, Indiana).

Simpson Technologies, an AFS Corporate Member based in Aurora, Illinois, is hosting a “virtual” Manufacturing Day, encouraging parents and educators to use virtual foundry tours, augmented reality and other tools to bring metalcasting to life for students.
