Molding Methods & Materials Division

The Molding Division is dedicated to the study and understanding of the methods used to produce metal castings. The bulk of division activity is directed toward sand casting as the most prominent casting process. Committee efforts include work dedicated to sand cores and investment casting.

Executive/Program & Awards Committee―The Executive Committee is responsible for the overall coordination and guidance of the division's special committees. The committee monitors all committee projects, including any research sponsored by individual committees of the division, which have been approved and funded by the AFS Research Board.

Technical Publications Monitoring Committee―Review all publications generated by the committees of the Molding Methods & Materials Division to ensure that the format and contents (test procedures, etc.) are correct and to submit any areas requiring modification back to the originating committee. The primary publication of concern is the AFS “Mold and Core Test Handbook”.

Awards Committee―Selects and submits nominations to the AFS Board of Awards.

Mold-Metal Interface Reactions Committee ―Primary interest is to study the complex mechanisms of mold/core behavior and the role of mold atmosphere during the pouring of molten metal; to establish procedures and materials which maximize casting surface quality and minimize the need for surface reward by grinding or other processing.

Sand Additives & Testing Committee―Concentrates on studies of any and all additives used in green sand molding, including their applications and recommended use in sand mixtures where clay is the basic bonding material. Also writes and reviews all green sand test procedures for the AFS “Mold & Core Test Handbook”.

Cured Sand & Aggregate Committee―A technical resource to the metal industry providing research, education and technical assistance on all issues relating to cured sand core and mold processes, materials, and testing..

Investment Casting Committee―Develop and transfer information and technology that advances the design, application, and manufacture of investment castings.

Green Sand Committee―Studies all phases of green sand mold production, including both conventional and high-pressure (high-density) production techniques. Emphasis is on achievement of high-quality cast surfaces and establishment of tolerance guidelines.
