Metalcasting for Purchasing Professionals NEW

This NEW AFS Institute course provides a foundational introduction to metalcasting, designed specifically for buyers and supplier development professionals who are new to the industry. Participants will explore the major casting processes, learn how to select and audit metalcasting suppliers, understand the critical elements of the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP), and develop strategies for managing quality problems when they arise. The course concludes with a practical look at total cost of ownership, long-term agreements, and building a portfolio of approved casting suppliers.


Class participants will learn to:

  • Describe the major metalcasting processes and the ways the industry differs from other manufacturers
  • Summarize key criteria and considerations for selecting, auditing, and managing metalcasting suppliers
  • Identify the critical elements of a casting PPAP and the requirements associated with each
  • Recognize common casting defects, their causes, and a systematic approach for resolution
  • Explain metalcasting surcharges and how they affect total cost
  • Describe the advantages, disadvantages, and key considerations in long-term casting supply agreements

Course Instructor:

Jim White, Expert Consultant

With over 20 years' experience in the foundry industry working for Caterpillar Inc. Jim White was responsible for developing processes for iron castings, advanced product quality planning (APQP), design for manufacturability, and continuous improvement at Caterpillar’s Cast Metals Organization.   

The second half of Mr. White’s career was spent at Caterpillar’s Purchasing Division, providing leadership and technical expertise to both non-ferrous and ferrous casting suppliers. Eventually Mr. White would lead a team of purchasing professionals responsible for $200 million in world-wide casting spend.

His unique blend of experience as both a casting producer and purchaser gives him a unique perspective on the Casting Industry. Mr. White has addressed the AFS Executive Conference, and Casting Congress concerning the state of the foundry industry from the purchaser’s perspective. Mr. White is the 2010 recipient of the Childress-Loebler Lifetime Achievement Award.
