The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), through its ENERGY STAR program, has developed manufacturing sector-based plant energy performance indicators (EPIs) that encourage U.S. industries to use energy more efficiently.
AFS has partnered with ENERGY STAR to help metalcasting facilities reduce energy consumption and improve profitability. This program helps foundries develop a systematic approach and comprehensive energy management strategy. Participating companies can become ENERGY STAR “certified” and gain the right to use the ENERGY STAR banner and logo in communications with customers and the local community.
In late 2010, EPA expanded its existing work with heavy manufacturing industries by creating an industrial focus on metalcasting. This work involved early involvement and interest from several industry trade associations: the American Foundry Society (AFS), the Steel Founder’s Society of America (SFSA) and later from the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA). In 2016, EPA released an energy guide, “Energy Efficiency and Cost Saving Opportunities for Metal Casting,” (Kermeli, Deuchler, et al., 2016), which highlights cost saving energy efficiency opportunities with metalcasters at the process level.
More recently, a Duke University report was published detailing work with the metalcasting industry to provide plant-level indicators of energy efficiency for U. S. metalcasting facilities that produce various types of cast products made from iron, aluminum, and steel. The methods used to construct the EPIs are described, the equations, data and statistical methods are included. The report, “Development of Energy Star® Energy Performance Indicators for Metal Casters,” (Boyd, Doolin, et al., 2017) is accessed at:
AFS Corporate Member, AAM-Castings (prev. Grede Holdings LLC), has earned the ENERGY STAR® Partner of the Year recognition for the growth of its robust energy management program. AAM is a manufacturer of iron castings for the automotive, heavy truck, and industrial markets with foundries and machining operations in the U.S. and Mexico.
