Representative Peter Roskam visits AFS headquarters

January 17, 2018

U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, a Republican representing Illinois' 6th Congressional District and a leader in passing the recent tax reform bill in the House of Representatives, visited American Foundry Society (AFS) headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois, on Jan. 16.

Roskam discussed the importance of the American metalcasting industry and that an infrastructure bill would be an investment in our future prosperity. He even tried his hand at metalcasting.

"With infrastructure the taxpayer is getting something. You're going out and you're acquiring something," Roskam said. "This is the acquisition of an asset, basically, upon which our economy depends. So I think there's a lot of interest in trying to move forward on it. And what district in the country doesn't need more infrastructure?"

AFS has called on Congress to approve a package that will strengthen the U.S. economy and improve the nation's infrastructure.

As part of a tour of AFS headquarters, Roskam made a casting with the training kit called Foundry in a Box to make a custom tin medallion. Foundry in a Box teaches metalcasting basics to students by allowing them to create their own castings.

Rep. Peter Roskam watches as AFS Director of Education Shelly Dutler conducts a Foundry in a Box presentation.

"The visit allowed AFS to thank Rep. Roskam for his leadership on tax reform, discuss infrastructure investment and other AFS priorities, and provide an opportunity for him to experience metalcasting in person through Foundry in a Box,” AFS CEO Doug Kurkul said.

The American Foundry Society is a dynamic technical and advocacy organization that serves and represents the $33 billion metalcasting industry. AFS is the only association serving the entire industry, including all metals and processes, with a three-part focus on advocacy, education, and innovation. AFS also publishes Modern Casting and Metal Casting Design & Purchasing magazines and presents Metalcasting Congress and CastExpo, the largest trade events in North America. Founded in 1896, the organization is based in Schaumburg, Illinois, with an advocacy office in Washington, D.C. More information is available at
