AFS Reaches Gold Level Status With America Makes
October 15, 2015
AFS continues its membership with America Makes, the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute established in 2012 as the flagship institute of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. This year, AFS has achieved Gold Level member status through in-kind cost sharing from organizing workshops, meetings and a course as part of the America Makes and Youngstown Business Incubator (YBI)-lead “Accelerated AM Integration into the U.S. Foundry Industry” additive manufacturing project.
This new level of membership gives AFS more involvement in decision-making, including a governance board seat, as well as use of America Makes facilities for research & development and membership discounts for AFS members.
AFS has assisted the additive manufacturing project this year through various knowledge transfer events, including a free additive manufacturing workshop held in April and the development of a new AFS Institute course Design & Optimization for 3D Sand Printing. AFS has also started an ad-hoc Additive Manufacturing committee, which had its first meeting Oct. 13, with 35 engaged participants. Planning is now underway for a follow-up meeting on Jan. 12 at the ExOne facility in Houston and a two-and-a-half day Additive Manufacturing Conference for Fall 2016.
AFS is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1896. With its headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill., AFS provides members and consumers with information and services to promote and strengthen the metalcasting industry.
