2010 AFS Chapter Officer's Conference: New Decade, New Thinking
Thirty chapters, including the most recent addition–North Mexico–were in attendance at the 2010 AFS Chapter Officer’s Conference (COC), held Aug. 12-13, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Des Plaines, Ill. The theme of this year’s event “New Decade, New Thinking,” reflected the concept that new times warrant a new line of thinking for the chapters.

Topics discussed at the event included communicating with members, planning and promoting chapter meetings and what the chapter of the future may look like. The member communication portion included an online video demonstration with Katie Doherty of the AFS technical department, which illustrated how chapters can communicate via video conferencing as well as how to create social networking groups utilizing Facebook. Dave Krugman of AFS and Shawn Ingram of the AFS Texas Chapter worked together to create the Texas Chapter’s group in real time.

“It was exciting to see the level of involvement and commitment from the local volunteers at this event,” said Leo Baran, AFS director of membership services.  “Our desire was for each person to return home with at least one new idea; something that will continue to move their chapter toward the future.  And from the comments gathered after the conference, it seems that we succeeded.”
