Richard McCormack to Speak on Manufacturing at Government Affairs Conference
Richard McCormack, trade policy expert, author and editor of Manufacturing & Technology News, will deliver opening remarks on the state of U.S manufacturing and recent actions taken by the Obama Administration and Congress to assist the domestic manufacturing base in these tough economic times at the 2010 Metalcasters Alliance for Government Affairs Conference. The annual conference, cosponsored by AFS and the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA), will be held May 5-7 at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Washington.  As a Washington, D.C. based journalist, McCormack has covered science, technology and government for more than 20 years, specializing in economic competitiveness and globalization.

Important topics included at this year’s conference will be economic recovery, climate change, tax policy, safety and health matters, and access to credit. Following a day of briefings on key issues, attendees will spend the second day on Capitol Hill meeting face-to-face with their senators and representatives to discuss the impact pending laws will have on their business.

In addition, a half-day session on day three will include an in-depth overview of a series of pressing regulatory matters, such as:
  • EPA ramping up its efforts to address climate change, toxic chemicals, and air and water quality;
  • complying with the provisions of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act;
  • OSHA’s development of comprehensive regulations on combustible dust and crystalline silica and perhaps ergonomics in the future.

This year’s conference will allow AFS and NADCA members to bring a colleague from the same at a greatly reduced rate.

“There has never been a more crucial time for the metalcasting industry to unite and bring its collective legislative input to Washington, D.C.,” said Jerry Call, AFS executive vice president. “This conference will offer the unique opportunity to gain insights on upcoming legislation rulemakings, while delivering ideas on pro-manufacturing legislation to spur economic growth.”
