AFS to Find Lightweight Casting Solutions, Create Jobs
AFS is currenty soliciting white papers for evaluation and funding consideration for a new Advanced Lightweight Casting Solutions (ALCS) for Defense Applications program. White papers are being considered in three broad categories:

• metalcasting process improvement and advancement;
• process modeling and simulation improvements;
• cast material improvements, with a focus on efforts to reduce component weight.

The strategy of the ALCS is to focus on lightweight metals (aluminum, magnesium and titanium), advanced high strength ferrous materials (austempered ductile iron, high strength steels), and casting methods and supporting technologies to produce various vital defense and commercial components in the shortest possible time. The program will help the U.S. metalcasting industry improve its manufacturing readiness through a variety of production technologies, advancements in metal alloys to enhance properties and performance, and extending the state of the science in net-shape manufacturing and rapid prototype/production technology. This will create an opportunity to U.S. metalcasting facilities to implement these technologies and manufacture the best available cast components for weapon systems. Program involvement by a cross-section of manufacturing, academia and research sectors led by AFS, the largest metalcasting national technical and trade association, will ensure rapid technology transfer and creation of manufacturing jobs.

For more information or to submit a white paper, contact Tom Prucha, AFS vice president of technical services, at 800/537-4237 x264 or
