AFS, EPA Agree on MACT Standards |

After two years of discussion, the American Foundry Society (AFS) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are in general agreement on the proposed modifications to the final MACT (maximum achievable control technology) standards. When the EPA issued the final National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (commonly referred to as MACT) in April 2002, AFS filed a legal challenge to allow continued negotiations on several provisions within the standards. Since that time, AFS and EPA have agreed on 34 of the 35 issues identified as part of the industry’s lawsuit. The revised MACT standards provide greater clarification and flexibility than the original language. However, while the provisions within the standard have changed, facilities still must meet the compliance date of April 23, 2007.
