MODERN CASTING Explores Energy Casting Apps
The February issue of MODERN CASTING takes a look at potential casting applications in the emerging alternative energy industries. New renewable energy sources, such as wind and geothermal power, are driven by the desire to abate the dependence on oil and conserve traditional energy sources. Many alternative energy options depend on metal castings to support the infrastructure. This article illustrates how metalcasting facilities can take advantage. Also included in the February issue is the annual look at current industry research projects. The two projects highlighted cover refractory coating measurements and the affect of casting skin on light weight ductile iron castings. A dozen other projects are summarized.

This month's metalcaster profile is on Denison Industries, Denison, Texas, a producer of aluminum castings via permanent mold, semi-permanent mold and sand casting. With an eye toward expanding its reach in niche markets, the company has invested more into its facility in the last year than it had in the prior eight years combined.
