No-Lead Copper Alloy Consortium

AFS Technical Staff coordinated the formation of a consortium of metalcasters and suppliers to address the technical needs demanded by new California legislation restricting the lead content of copper alloy castings used in water applications. This new legislation, due to take effect in 2010, will severely hinder the application of castings used in plumbing applications in California. The AFS consortium is actively working on testing new and existing lead-free alloys to determine if they can satisfactorily be used for plumbing components. The Copper Development Association, Non-Ferrous Founders Society and Plumbing Manufacturers Institute are active members of the AFS consortium.
