Sen. John E. Sununu (R-N.H.) addressed the more than 120 metalcasters at the AFS Foundry Executive Conference, held in New Castle, H.H., Sept. 16-18. In his talk, Sununu said he believes his background as the only engineer in the U.S. Senate gives him the ability to analyze and solve metalcasters’ issues. “It has really forced me to ensure that we craft legislation to deal with a particular problem, and that it addresses the problem without creating unintended consequences,” Sununu said. He added that his focus will remain making sure businesses stay competitive in the global environment with fair trade policies, investment in technology and low tax policies. “What government can do, what government needs to do, is create the best possible environment, where entrepreneurs, risk-takers, are rewarded. It is valuable to have a group like AFS to take your issues to Washington D.C.” In addition to Sen. Sununu’s attendance, AFS honored Phil Duke, vice president, The Mouat Company, Inc., Birmingham, Ala., with the Wm. J. Grede Award, which recognizes major contributions in the fields of management, marketing and education. Also honored was Jim Young, technical sales manager, Unimin Corp., Sinking Spring, Pa., who received the Keating Founders’ Freedom Award for significant contributions to the foundry industry, and active participation in the fields of government affairs, human resource management and education.
