Development of Digital Radiographic Standards Wins Defense Award |
The American Foundry Society (AFS) was part of a coalition that won a Defense Manufacturing Achievement Award at the 2011 Defense Manufacturing Conference, Anaheim, Calif.
The American Metalcasting Consortium (AMC) accepted the award in
Anaheim, Calif., on behalf of the team that also included AFS, the South
Carolina Research Authority (SCRA), the Univ. of Alabama – Birmingham,
the Defense Logistics Agency and the Steel Founders Society of America.
The AMC Castings for Improved Defense Readiness Program, along with
ASTM, the Air Force and suppliers, won the award for developing digital
radiographic standards for aerospace castings. The standards reduce
inspection time by up to 90% and eliminate film processing costs and
storing. The standards also improve the ability to detect casting flaws.

Headquartered in Schaumburg, Ill., AFS is a not-for-profit technical and
