Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

The American Foundry Society’s EHS Division assists metalcasters to understand and comply with environmental and safety (OSHA) regulations through in-plant technical visits, training seminars, publications and technical committees open to AFS members.

In-plant EHS Services:

In-plant visits to facilities are offered to conduct Industrial Hygiene Air Sampling, Safety Inspections (Mock OSHA Audits) and facility Environmental Compliance Reviews.  Service fees are:

AFS Corporate members: $650 for each in-plant service day plus a $275 preparatory fee per visit plus travel expenses.

AFS Non-members: $1100 for each in-plant service day plus a $400 preparatory fee per visit plus travel expenses.

Our staff will provide you with professional service.  All reports/test results are strictly confidential between client and our staff.  No state or federal agencies have access to our records without the client's permission.  To arrange a site visit or for additional information contact AFS EHS staff at 800/537-4237.

Beneficial Reuse:

U.S. metalcasters currently dispense 28.18% of their spent metalcasting sand to beneficial reuse programs, according to the results of a recent survey.

The recent benchmarking survey of 244 metalcasting facilities by AFS was part of a multi-year data gathering exercise to more fully understand the beneficial reuse industry. The data represents the amount of reuse performed from 2004 to 2006 by the participants, most of whom were ferrous metalcasters of varying sizes.

Survey respondents indicated construction fill and Portland Cement/Concrete were the most frequent beneficial reuse applications, and the average hauling distance for metalcasting sand was 17.9 miles. For more information on industry practices regarding the disposal and beneficial reuse of foundry sand, contact Alicia Oman, AFS Washington Office, at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , or click here to download a brochure with detailed information on the survey.

Used foundry sand is a valuable resource that can be beneficially reused in many ways.  If you are not currently using it and want to do so, click here to find a recycling plant near you.  To view a brochure on beneficial reuse, click here.
