AFS has released a new publication Casting Defects Handbook: Aluminum & Aluminum Alloys. The nonferrous publication highlights many of the common types of casting defects with a new approach and is categorized by production methods, including sand, permanent mold, high-pressure diecasting, low pressure, investment, plaster and lost foam casting.
David Neff (Ret.), the book’s technical editor, headed up this project along with thirteen metalcasting industry experts to compile this user friendly casting defects handbook. David has more than 35 years of experience in nonferrous molten metal treatment technology.
The organization of the material is presented in an easy to review format suitable for metalcasting floor operators, as well as process engineers, metallurgists and quality control personnel. The publication also provides a comprehensive visual atlas of the more common aluminum casting defects to enable metalcasting personnel to quickly identify the type of defect, address possible causes and establish corrective actions.
For more information or to purchase this publication, contact AFS customer service at 800/537-4237 or visit the AFS E-Store.

“Are we there yet?” You can just hear the impatient toddler cry as a car trip goes on and on. While that impatience is understandable, casting engineers and production managers are often left feeling the same way as they wait to see if the results of a “fix” to a casting process or mold set up will yield the results they are looking for. Too often we declare success after the next run only to have the problem recur. How do you tell whether corrective actions are effective or not?
Find out the answer to this question and more at the AFS sponsored webinar Confirming Effectiveness of Corrective Action, presented by Ted Schorn, Enkei America, Columbus, Ind. The presentation will be given on March 24, and is free for AFS Corporate Members, $25 for AFS Individual Members and $100 for Nonmembers
