AFS News
With the help of American Foundry Society (AFS) research, the Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM), Madison, Wis., has procured a five year, $10.1 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The grant has been issued to take cast aluminum and magnesium nanocomposites from laboratory to large-scale production. AFS helped UWM by providing the research funds necessary to initiate the seed project that help to prove the viability of the technology concept.
A method that combines solidification processes with ultrasonic cavitation based dispersion of nanoparticles in aluminum and magnesium alloy melts was developed by Prof. Xiaochun Li at UWM through a funded project from AFS. As published in the Metalcasting Industry Research chapter of the Spring 2009 (Vol. 3, Issue 2) International Journal of Metalcasting (IJMC), the need of cast aluminum and magnesium alloys having elevated temperature capabilities is expected to increase as automotive industries are forced to improve the fuel efficiency of their products.
"It could reduce weight by 20% to 30% on an engine block for example," said Tom Prucha, AFS vice president of technical services. “If it proves successful, the research eventually could result in thousands of new jobs in the U.S. metalcasting industry.”

Time is running out for you to submit your next casting of the year. The AFS/Metal Casting Design & Purchasing 2010 Casting Competition is your chance to show the engineering and purchasing community what a metal casting can accomplish. Beyond the company recognition and industry public relations gained through the "best-in-class" castings, all entries will appear in the Metal Casting Design & Purchasing magazine’s "Castings in Action" and "Casting Innovations" departments. This year’s Casting of the Year will receive a free year’s license of Magmasoft simulation software, while Best in Class receive 6 month licenses. Also, this year’s winners will be showcased at the Cast in North America Pavilion at CastExpo’10.

In December, individuals from 32 companies including two AFS Corporate Members joined U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Cathy Zoi at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C., to mark the launch of the Industrial Technologies Program Save Energy Now LEADER initiative. At the event, the 32 LEADER Companies signed a voluntary pledge to reduce their industrial energy intensity by 25% over the next 10 years. The companies were recognized for their examples of leadership by being the first to partner with DOE in the new initiative, committing to aggressive energy intensity reduction goals and a clean energy future.
The AFS Corporate Members at the event were Neenah Foundry and ThyssenKrupp Waupaca. For more infomation on this event, contact Tom Prucha, AFS vice president of technology, at

Since the inaugural issue in fall 2007 the International Journal of Metalcasting has provided quality, peer-reviewed metalcasting research and technology to the global metalcasting industry. Now, we can also say that it is an incredible bargain as well.
The 2009 Study of Subscription Prices for Scholarly Journals charts subscription price and yearly price increases for scholarly journal published by professional Societies in various fields. Published by industry leader in journal publication, Allen Press, the document summarizes historical prices of approximately 250 publications. According to this study, the average subscription price of a peer-reviewed journal in 2009 was $701.10, an increase from $613.93 in 2007. U. S. Society Journals have increased in price an average of 7.4% annually since 1989. The average price increase for peer-reviewed journal was 5.9% and 7.9% respectively in 2008 and 2009.
The IJMC provides the very best in international metalcasting research and technology. All papers have been approved through a very intense peer-review process that sees about a 20% rejection rate and many other papers substantially modified and improved prior to publication based on the peer-review process. At a $99 subscription price for (unchanged since it’s inception in 2007) AFS has often said that IJMC is the best deal in town. Now, it appears that we have evidence.
