Compilation on Magnesium Casting Technology Released
AFS recently released a new publication titled Casting Magnesium. This special compilation CD contains papers that were previously published from 2001-2009 in the Transactions of the American Foundry Society and MODERN CASTING magazine.

This compilation provides an up-to-date look at magnesium castings, applications, design and technology. The 55 papers are fully searchable for ease of use, and the publication is divided into three major sections:

  • magnesium casting market trends;
  • metallurgy and microstructure;
  • casting process development.

Research and development activities led by the AFS Magnesium Div. 6 and its academic and research partners are included within this publication. It is anticipated that these ongoing developments by these dedicated individuals and groups will lead to sustainable growth for cast magnesium far into the future.

U.S. Metalcasting: Is Safety Really First?
It has been said that workers are the most valuable asset for a metalcasting facility. How well are we protecting that asset? Although we have improved in recent years, the metalcasting industry’s record for worker safety still lags behind other manufacturing sectors. It is time for an increased awareness of safety and an enhanced effort to raise awareness of potential hazards and dangers in our plants.

On July 21 at 11:00 EST (10:00 CST) AFS replayed the 113th Metalcasting Congress' President's Session on safety. During this 60 minute webinar, attendees heard facts about our industry’s safety record, learn how safety can be planned for and controlled and hear a case study from a metalcasting facility that has achieved 2 million hours without a lost time accident. The webinar was produced in three segments, which can be found by visiting www.afsinc.org/webinars

International Journal of Metalcasting Receives Thomson Reuters Accreditation
The quarterly technical journal of the American Foundry Society (AFS), the International Journal of Metalcasting (IJMC), has been given the distinct honor of being accredited by Thomson Reuters, a world renowned information source. In addition to being accepted as an accredited source of technical information, the IJMC now is included in the Thomson Reuters research and citation database.

The database provides a platform for finding scholarly peer-reviewed materials–materials that are unbiased, current and accurate, and achieve a level of quality not reached by solely searching the internet. It also is used to evaluate the scientific performance of authors.

“The IJMC continues to strive to be the global leader in transfer and dissemination of research and technology for the global metalcasting industry,” said Tom Prucha, AFS vice president of technical services. “It also is important that our authors have the best platform to present their work and that our readers are being presented the best information available. That is why we will continue to pursue the widest coverage for our product. Being selected for database indexing is a testament to the quality of the journal, our editorial review board and our contributing authors.”

In addition to Reuters, the IJMC also is included in three other databases: Chemical Abstracts, ProQuest and EBSCO. These links can be found by visiting http://www.metalcastingjournal.com/.

For more information or to subscribe to the IJMC, contact AFS customer service at 800/537-4237 or visit the AFS e-store at www.afsinc.org/estore.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculation Tool Released
Climate change legislation and greenhouse gas regulatory requirements that could impact the metalcasting industry are receiving increased attention and focus in Washington, D.C. The AFS Committee for Air Quality (10-E) greenhouse gas emissions working group has prepared a tool for metalcasting facilities to calculate their direct greenhouse gas emissions from fuel consumption. The tool can be downloaded from the AFS website by clicking here.

The primary purpose of this tool is to generate a preliminary estimate of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from a metalcasting facility. The tool is not intended to be a substitute for a detailed GHG inventory or to meet the reporting and other requirements of any current or future local, state, or federal laws or regulations. The GHG estimate can, however, help a facility determine how Climate Change legislation and GHG emissions regulations may impact their business.
