Recycled Materials Resource Center

The Recycled Materials Resource Center (RMRC) is a national transportation center that promotes the appropriate use of recycled materials in the highway environment.  The Center’s mission includes testing, evaluation, demonstrations, and guideline development to increase use of recycled materials in transportation infrastructure construction and maintenance.  The RMRC website provides information on recycling and reusing industrial materials in roadways.  RMRC was Congressionally-mandated in the SAFETEA transportation authorization act; funding for RMRC is provided by the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

RMRC Foundry Sand Portal
RMRC collaborated with AFS-FIRST and FHWA to create several web-based tools that are collected under the RMRC Foundry Sand Portal:

Foundry Sand References
A searchable database of journal articles and technical literature relating to the use of foundry sand in infrastructure applications.  Public domain documents may be downloaded; abstracts of copyrighted journal articles are referenced..

Foundry Sand Standards and Specifications
A searchable database of standards and specifications relating to the use of foundry sand in highway and construction applications.

Foundry Sand Case Studies
Technical case studies covering the highest volume uses of foundry sand in construction, which are embankments, structural fills, and base course applications.

Foundry Sand Contacts
A listing of Federal, state, academic and industry contacts for questions about using foundry sand in construction applications.

Foundry Sand Webinars
In 2008, RMRC presented a series of foundry sand webinars focused on issues relating to foundry sand in highway construction.  Each webinar presents an topic overview, supported by examples, testing requirements, and case studies.  The individual webinar sessions may be viewed either as slide handouts or as archived webinar presentations.

User Guidelines for Industrial Byproduct Materials in Pavement Construction
The User Guidelines are an FHWA-developed information resource for 20 different byproduct materials in road construction.  The Guidelines were recently updated to include current information about the U.S. EPA’s Resource Conservation Challenge priority materials -- coal ash, foundry sands and construction and demolition materials --along with current information about environmental considerations in the use of byproduct materials.
