2008 Casting Competition Winners

Cast in A356-T6 aluminum via semi-permanet mold, this Harley Davidson Oil Tank cast by Carley Foundry, Blaine, Minn., beat out a plastic oil tank design initially conceived by the customer, as well as a multi-piece fabrication.

Casting of the Year 		Cast in white iron via the nobake process, this static mixer tube produced by Castalloy Corp., Waukesha, Wis., is highly abrasion-resistant, making it ideal for the high velocity mixing and cleansing of coal powder.

Best-In-Class: Castalloy 		Denison Industries, Denison, Texas, cast this part in A356 aluminum with T71 heat treatment casting via the nobake molding process. The military main transmission housing was converted from a multi-piece assembly and eliminated external tubing, hydraulic lines and passageways be casting them into the design.

This agri-speed hitch was cast in ductile iron and iron via green sand molding by Dotson Iron Castings, Mankato, Minn. The hitch enables the automatic hookup and disconnection of farm equipment without requiring the operator to leave the cab.

Best-In-Class: Dotson 		This part for material handling steering was cast in brass via the permanent mold chill casting process by Piad Precision Casting Corp., Greensburg, Pa. Converted from a multi-piece weldment, the casting reduced the weight by 10%.

Best-In-Class: Piad 		Citation Columbiana, Columbiana, Ala., cast this multifunction bracket/towing eye for Volvo in ductile iron via the lost foam process.

Honorably Mention: Citation
General Motors Corp. and Diversified Machine Inc., Warren, Mich., worked together to design and produce this A356 aluminum engine cradle for the Cadillac CTS. Cast via vacuum riserless/pressure riserless casting, the part was converted from a steel stamping/weldment.

Honorable Mention: GM/Diversified Machine 		This A356 aluminum with T6 heat treatment casting is an automotive aftermarket intake manifold. Produced by Trilore Technologies Inc., Alamo, Calif., via its proprietary ME process, the casting weighs 13 lbs. and features thin walls.

Honorable Mention: Trilore Technologies 		Cast in A356 aluminum with T6 heat treatment via the ablation sand process by Eck Industries, Manitowoc, Wis., this rear motorcycle frame fits on the tail section of a Buell Motorcycle Co. bike and saved weight and cost by incorporating the bike's shock mount location.
